The FBI arrested the man suspected in mailing over a dozen bombs to prominent Democrats and CNN. Agents took 56-year-old Cesar Sayoc into custody on Oct. 26, 2018, in Plantation, Florida.

A national investigation was launched after bombs were delivered by mail to the homes of former-President Barack Obama, former-Vice President Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, George Soros, Senator Cory Booker, D-N.J., former-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, Robert DeNiro, Senator Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Tom Steyer who is a liberal donor and the man leading the charge to impeach Trump. CNN also received a bomb. As of Oct. 27, 14 IEDs have been recovered by officials.

If found guilty, Sayoc could serve up to 48 years in prison for the following charges:

  1. Interstate transportation of an explosive.
  2. Illegal mailing of explosives.
  3. Threats against former presidents and certain other persons.
  4. Threatening interstate communications.
  5. Assaulting federal officers.

Fact-Checking to Find the Truth

The fact-checking site Snopes seems to have worked overtime sorted out the truth from fiction. One of the claims showed up on Wednesday, October 24. Facebook user, Elisa Leone Taylor’s post stated:

A retired postal worker just called into the Roger and JP Show, and stated the following:

The USPS does NOT deliver to the homes of anyone under Secret Service protection, like former presidents Clinton and Obama. All mail addressed to their residence is delivered to the Secret Service field office. Therefore, the reports that bombs were delivered to the homes of 2 former presidents is an absolute LIE!
That is all. Carry on.

Simply because their mail is intercepted by secret service before it is forwarded does not mean the news stations were misleading the public. This misstatement about the reports being a lie was shared 1.7 thousand times.

In the same article, Snopes also wrote about conspiracy theories that arose surrounding the bombs allegedly sent by Sayoc. Some hate-mongers dubbed the reports of mailed bombs as a hoax. Memes with photos of pipe bombs circulated with statements claiming the news to be a “false flag operation” by liberals determined to discredit the president by claiming his rhetoric caused the so-called bomber to target prominent Democratic figures.

Quite the contrary is true. During a press conference on Oct. 26, FBI Director Christopher Wray emphatically stated the homemade IEDs were not hoaxes. If the devices had detonated they would have caused harm.

Disturbing Facebook Pages and Images

Alarmingly, there are two Facebook pages with ominous names; killgeorge soros and killall socialists. These sites, like the suspect’s site, are not accessible. When searching the names, “public photos that appear to be screenshots. There is no way to discover who is the creator of these pages, if, in fact, they are real.

One image is that of the van belonging to Sayoc, which has been plastered all over T.V. and the internet. All of the windows are covered with stickers. Some are of President Donald Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence with their thumbs held high as well the presidential seal. Another rather large sticker shows Trump standing on a tank with his name emblazing the sides, behind him is the Amercian flag in front of the fire from an explosion. On the same picture is a soaring American eagle.

Others depicted Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, George Soros with targets over their faces. One image shows the CNN logo below the words “dishonest media” above and “sucks” below. On either side of the logo are news anchors also with targets over their faces.

Another viral meme prompted NBC affiliate KGW8 to fact-check its contents. The meme stated five things, first, that Sayoc was the bomber; second, he was a Trump supporter; third, he is a life-long Republican; fourth, he has an extensive criminal background; fifth, this was an example of homegrown terrorism.

The reporter stated while all were true, they would not state Sayoc was a Trump man even though his Facebook page shows he was a reporter. The video below is a compilation of photos from Sayoc’s page. They also refused to state whether or not the accused was a life-long Republican since they only reviewed the voting records for Florida. No comment was made about the words at the bottom of the meme: “This is the face of terrorism in America.”

Clapper, on the other hand, definitively declared, “This is definitely domestic terrorism. No question about it in my mind.”
