SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – If you do decide to hit the road during the wintery conditions, there are some safety tips to keep in mind.
AAA has a checklist of things you should have with you if you get behind the wheel during a snow storm. Some of the things they suggest having include blankets, a flashlight, jumper cables and a shovel.
The safety tips continue for after you start the car. Officials also have some tips for when you begin driving.
They suggest that you avoid using your cruise control when the roads are wet. Also leave extra room between you and the car in front of you. Be prepared for slower traffic and stick to main roads if you can.
Officials all across the Midwest are encouraging people to stay safe especially as conditions get worse.
“As the snow accumulates, the wind is going to pick up. There’s going to be blowing snow, which is really going to hamper visibility and we’ll have drifting on the roadways,” Kevin Gutknecht with Minnesota Department of Transportation said.
