(NBC) – Experts say it’s much cheaper to buy most anything related to travel in August.

“As kids head back to school, you start to see demand slow even as early as early to mid August so it’s a great time to find deals,” said travel expert, Jeanenne Tornatore. “You really have to know where to find them.”

Tornatore says finding deals on hotels and resorts isn’t really that hard.

That puts those with a few more vacation days to burn this summer in a very lucky spot.

“Definitely look at destinations where the temperatures are high because you’ll find the prices will be low,” Tornatore explained.

For example, New Orleans and Houston are two cities where 4-star properties will only cost a hundred bucks a night.

Even a last minute cruise is a bargain, even though August is the heart of the hurricane season.

“Especially if you’re taking a 3 to 5 night cruise you can plan those very last minute and still watch for the weather to make sure you are not going to be affected,” Tornatore said.

Another tip to travel affordably in August:

“Don’t forget about your points and miles,” said Julian Mark Kheel.

Julian Mark Kheel is a senior editor with “The Points Guy.”

“And especially when prices are high and you can really get great value for them and you don’t have to pull money out of your pocket,” Kheel said.

Money you could use for the rest of your late summer travel.
