SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Blizzard warnings cover parts of KELOLAND and the impacts from this latest winter storm are wide-reaching.
As the snow falls in KELOLAND, temperatures are falling and the winds are increasing. The combination of those ingredients isn’t a friendly forecast for travelers.
This latest storm has featured a variety of changing conditions. From snow to rain and back to snow in Sioux Falls, road conditions can change quickly in weather like this.
The wind and the falling temperatures will be two big factors affecting roads the next 12 to 24 hours. Our FutureScan wind product shows gusts in the 30 to 40 miles per hour range will be very widespread. A few gusts will exceed 40 mph, especially in the blizzard warning areas. This can easily create whiteout conditions.
Blowing snow is always a problem, but especially when temperatures drop as the winds increase. The colder the temperature, the more powdery the snow will be.
The flash freeze effect will take over on these slushy roads and parking lots as the colder air arrives. It all adds up to travel issues and we’ll have updates both on-air and online as the winter weather continues.
